As of late, the physical workplace is continuously changing and traditional, central office spaces are falling second to co-working spaces and college-like campus layouts. Here lies the case with technology giant Google, and their innovative workspaces which focus on fostering innovation through non-traditional layouts and locations – thus creating a campus-like layout of buildings throughout Manhattan. At one of their spaces located at 75th Ninth Avenue, BOCA Group was brought on by an architect on behalf of Google to determine the optimal quantity, capacity, and speed of its elevators to serve a unique and ever-changing population of employees and visitors.

CHALLENGE

WHAT WAS DONE/PROCESS

BOCA Group performed theoretical traffic calculations to evaluate the proposed vertical transportation configuration and confirm if the proposed plan would accommodate a population that is always in flux. We performed multiple scenarios of simulations using industry-standard assumptions about peak period intensity and human behavior until a reasonable equilibrium between population and service levels on the floors with workplace areas was achieved for this unique property. Through these theoretical studies, BOCA Group was able to paint a picture of the hypothetical daily traffic of the building and provide schematic design dimensions for their proposed elevator scheme.

BOCA Group was able to provide the client with realistic data and specifications in order to make their planning process as effective as possible, thus saving time, money, and making for an efficient user experience in an ever-changing population.
